Focus on: Hoover Dam near Las Vegas

While you are visiting Las Vegas, Nevada be sure to make time for a visit to Hoover Dam. Depart Las Vegas, and in around 45 minutes, you will be on the threshold of one of the most fabulous engineering designs of the 20th century. Declared a National Civil Engineering Landmark, this structure is at once awe-inspiring and humbling, especially as you grasp the fact that the massive dam eclipses you. The Hoover Dam is a testimony to the resilience of the American spirit as the dam’s construction took place during one of the lowest points in American history, The Great Depression.

Hoover Dam Facts

• The concrete arch-gravity dam spans the Colorado River in the Black Canyon. Hoover Dam channels the river’s might into hydroelectric power serving Nevada, Arizona, and various cities in Southern California.

• Plans for the dam received official approval from President Calvin Coolidge in December 1928.

• The city of Las Vegas lobbied to be the center of operations for the dam’s construction. To that end, the town closed many speakeasies and brothels to give the appearance of propriety.

Boulder City, Nevada became the headquarters of the building operations instead of Las Vegas. The city was a model which sprung from the area’s growing housing need. Word of the project spread and thousands of unemployed men and their families came to the region holding onto hope that the project would provide much-needed work.

• A total of 112 deaths occurred as a result of the dam’s construction. Additionally, extreme heat and exposure to carbon monoxide claimed more than 130 lives.

• Hoover Dam’s construction finished two years ahead of schedule, taking place between 1931-1936.

• More than 1-million people tour the massive 726-foot tall marvel each year. While you are visiting Hoover Dam, there are some sights you will not want to miss.
