Riviera Maya Tours

Riviera Maya is a magnificent resort area located south of Cancun, Mexico on the Caribbean coastline. The area that makes up Riviera Maya is a corridor, approximately 40 kilometers long beginning with Puerto Morelos and ending at the town of Punta Allen. The Riviera Maya also includes the Island of Cozumel.

Your visit to the area offers you outstanding beaches, elegant accommodations at one of the popular all-inclusive resorts, and amazing opportunities to view ancient Mayan ruins. You will find that the Riviera Maya is not as busy as Cancun. The government has plans for developing the area extensively over the next few decades, but for now, there is ample space to enjoy yourself in Riviera Maya.

Water sports, archeology, and the natural beauty of the region are Riviera Maya’s main tourist attractions. Once you are there, you will find numerous activities that will appeal to you as well as fantastic shopping, dining, and nightlife.

For a change of pace, consider spending a day on the fabulous island of Cozumel. It is located just off of the mainland in Riviera Maya, so it is easily accessible. The island is known for snorkeling, diving, and the fantastic views of undersea life. Other activities on Cozumel include glass-bottom boat rides, deep-sea fishing excursions, and ancient ruins including El Caracol, a Mayan lighthouse. You won’t want to miss the unique mini-submarine ride which gives those who do not snorkel or dive a chance to see the stunning underwater world off the coast of Cozumel. Shopping, particularly for excellently priced silver, and dining are also great ways to spend your time on the island.

Chichen Itza

At the same time European nations languished in the dark ages, the Maya flourished in the Yucatan Peninsula in Central America. Master of Mathematics, science, astronomy, and architecture, the Mayan had a complex society. As early as 600A.D. expansive cities made up the Mayan Empire. However, none of the fabulous cities could rival the city of Chichen Itza.

At its peak, Chichen Itza was home to over 50,000 people. The city boasted massive stone temples, smaller residences, and a complex series of causeways connecting parts of the city. The buildings in Chitchen Itza once were colorful as well as architecturally impressive; the structures once gleamed in shades of red, purple, blue, and green. You can only imagine the breathtaking splendor of the city during this time. Many of the structures show the influence of numerous cultures which indicates the area was home to people from other regions. Archeologists believe that Chitchen Itza was one of the largest and most culturally diverse cities in the empire.

Ten of Chichen Itza’s Must-See Points of Interest

While the site of Chichen Itza is a destination unto itself, no visit to the area would be complete if you missed any of these spots.

• The Sacred Cenote
• Gran Juego de Pelota (The Great Ball Court)
• The Red House Chichanchob
• La Iglesia
• Cenote Ik kil
• El Caracol – Observatorio
• Temple of the Warriors
• El Castillo
• The Ossuary
• Temple of the Bearded Man

If you are planning a Mexican getaway near Cancun or Riviera Maya, Chichen Itza is a must-see destination. It is south of Cancun, located in Tinúm Municipality, Yucatán State, Mexico. You can easily access the city. Today, ruins and relics are all that remains of this hub of commerce and culture, but if we listen carefully, the echoes of the past can still speak to us about life in this ancient land.
