Discover Loire Valley Castles and superbe Renaissance castles. The usual order of visit is Amboise Castle followed by Chenonceau in the morning, then Chambord in the afternoon, but this is subject to change. You will have lunch in the city of Chenonceau, near the castle, at 'Gateau Breton' restaurant. Be ready for a wonderful day in the Loire Valley!

Chateau d'Amboise

One of the first truly "royal" residences of its kind, chateau Amboise was built during the 15th and the 16th centuries on the orders of Charles VIII, Louis XII and François 1. Following in the footsteps of the great kings of France, you will discover a magnificent example of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Today, the Chateau still houses an exceptional collection of furniture which has been admirably preserved.

Chateau de Chenonceau

By building chateau Chenonceau on the Cher river in the 1513, Thomas Bohier razed the castle-keep and the FORTIFIED MILL of the Marques family only keeping the dungeon. It is sad that he never managed to see the finished castle and was completed by his wife and son. Later, it became crown property. Henri II offered this castle to his favourite, Diane de Poitiers. She then decided to have a bridge built, linking the castle to the right bank of the river. This was done by Philibert de l'Orne, the resident architect.

Following the death of Henri II, Catherine de Medicis took over the ruling and forced Diane de Poitiers to return the chateau Chenonceau to crown. During her reign and as the Queen mother, Catherine commissioned a great gallery to be built on the bridge.

Chateau de Chambord

The royal Chateau de Chambord is one of the most recognizable chateaux in the world because of its very distinct French Renaissance architecture that blends traditional French medieval forms with classical Italian structures and is also the largest castle in the Loire valley with 440 rooms, 365 fireplaces and 13 great staircases.

It was constructed by King François I in part to be near to his mistress the Comtesse de Thoury, a member of a very important family of France, whose domaine the chateau de Muides was adjacent. One of the architectural highlights is the spectacular double-helix open staircase that is the centerpiece of the castle designed by...Leonardo Da Vinci.

Price includes admission for unguided castle tours, lunch with wine included at Chenonceau.

A very long day (the trip back was through Paris rush hour traffic), but an excellent tour nevertheless. Rudolfo was a knowledgeable and friendly tourguide. The lunch was an excellent full-course meal at a charming local village restaurant. The three chateaus were a very good choice, impressive and memorable. The only negative was that our mini-van was full and the quarters were very close for such a long trip.

Enjoyable tour, shared the tour van with others. Gwen was our tour guide and driver - she was punctual and a safe driver; giving us insightful comments about each chateau and interesting anecdotes of the characters who lived there. Would have liked it even better if she had been our guide within the chateaus; but nevertheless, it was fun and interesting exploring the interiors ourselves.

Our visit to the Loire Valley was, as my son said, "tres magnifique!" We travelled with a family from Argentina and our guide, Frank Oliver, was delightful. He provided good introductions to each chateaux in both English and Spanish (and also speaks Portuguese and, of course, French) and is an excellent driver. Lunch in the town near Chennonceax was delicious, and the young waiter had just come back from a visit to Los Angeles. I highly recommend a visit to the Loire Valley with Conciergerie.

Olivier our guide, was amazing - he was very organized and extremely well informed. The only thing I may add is that while Chambord is beautiful from the outside, it is a disappointment inside compared to the other two chateaux. Maybe another chateau would be better to add to the list to replace Chambord.

A really wonderful trip! Fabrice, our guide, picked us up on time, and we had a delightful conversation on the way to the chateaux. He was extremely knowledgeable and very personable. He obviously has a very deep connection to the patrimony of the country, speaking most reverently about the many monuments we traversed. We spent a most convivial day and learned a great deal, too.
