During WWII, the area of Westminster in London was the heart of undercover and often underground activities where exiled governments, overseas forces, and elite spies worked tirelessly to thwart the Nazi forces of Adolph Hitler. Because of this, the Westminster area was a primary target of Hitler’s blitzkrieg bombing raids. Wartime bunkers sheltered Prime Minister Winston Churchill and his government during Nazi blitz of London. These areas offer visitors an in-depth look at life in wartime London and our tour is the only one which offers a walking tour led by a local guide and a visit inside the Churchill War Museum and the war rooms that includes an audio guide.

The tour’s starting point is Westminster, home to classic London sites such as Big Ben, 10 Downing Street, Westminster Abbey, Whitehall, and the Houses of Parliament. This portion of the tour also visits the Cenotaph, which is the UK’s primary national war memorial. Your guide will tell how the people of London coped during the years of war. Moreover, you will learn about the measures needed to endure life in London at this time.

Next, head underground to the wartime bunker of the Churchill War Rooms; audio narration explains this unique underground maze of rooms that saw strategies framed and secrets sheltered. Hear factual accounts about those who inhabited the bunker engaging in the top-secret work of deciphering enemy messages and creating maps of the Nazi movements.

The Churchill Museum gives visitors a detailed look inside the life of Sir Winston Churchill. Interactive exhibits including audio of his inspiring speeches allow you an up-close view of Churchill’s private and public life. You will gain insight into his world, including his fondness for painting and the bond he forged with United States President, Franklin Roosevelt.

The final stop on the tour provides a visit to the remainder of the war rooms. You will find that these rooms are just as they were on the day, in 1945, that they ceased to be necessary. This was the hub of Churchill’s war efforts. The British cabinet joined him in the bleak underground and formulated Hitler’s defeat. Further exploration of the maze of chambers explains the details of life underground. See everything from the Transatlantic Telephone Room where Churchill held highly restricted telephone conversations with President Roosevelt to Churchill’s underground kitchen. The war rooms reverberate with the drama and tension of this bleak period of history and give a strong testimony to the resilience of the people behind the defeat of Hitler’s war regime. During this portion of the tour, feel free to explore and experience the war rooms at your own pace, before exiting the area when you choose.

This up close look into wartime London will captivate history enthusiasts as the local guide walks them through the fascinating Westminster area and illuminates a dark period of British history. The Westminster, Churchill’s War Rooms & Museum Tour will give you the very best look inside of this time in history.

Josh was very good -- the right mix of informative and light. When I engaged him in a bit more in-depth discussion of incidents from the past he was very knowledgable and personable.
