The History of the Moulin Rouge Paris

As one of the first cabarets, beginning in 1889, it reflected the period in French history when experimentation, a light-hearted view of the world, a rejection of classicalism, and the nonchalance of the Belle Epoque period was at its height. Artistic creativity thrived, as painters and illustrators sought to express this new freedom from the former classical restrictions of the past. Japanese influences, such as seen in the paintings of Lautrec, were at their height. In this time of eccentricity, as well as the beginnings of the Eiffel Tower, the Moulin Rouge was born.

The Cancan Girls

The "unruly girls" or Chahuteuses were immortalized by Toulouse Lautrec; they were boisterously dancing this new dance, as witnessed by the painter and written about in 1898. Writers of the period thought that these girls, with their famous physical flexibility, were also reflecting their flexible morals. La Goulue was one of the most famous of the Can-can girls; Lautrec added to her immortality through his representations of her in his paintings.
